The laptop have still 6 more months of parts warranty but the service center says it take at least 14 working days to fix the problem. It is terrifically difficult to give up the laptop even for 24 hours.

Your rugged disk is in the process of failing. Though it's with the sole purpose one bad sector very soon, it will not magically get better. It's close to finding one little spot of malignant cancer... The handwriting is on the wall and it's only a event of time. The "big boys" deliberately build it extremely inconvenient for you to use their warranty. Saves them the hassle and the money.
Make a choice. Is giving up your computer for three weeks worth the price of just buying a hot hard drive? They're betting it isn't.
Sorry... but the truth is loud. If you'd bought it from us, we'd have guaranteed a 24 hour turnaround, on-site.
the easier said than done drive may be failing, so get a unknown drive and use xcopy to copy the data from the dated drive to new drive
